Lucy Lewis Walk – A new old adventure

28/09/2011

Today basked in the late September I was lucky enough to have scheduled a trial of an upcoming guided walk. Researched for months by one dedicated volunteer the results came together for this practice run. As seems to be becoming a trend I managed to volunteer myself to dress up for the starring role in this throw back to life in the area at the time of the 19th Century Tin Works.

Which starring role you ask? The famous Lucy Lewis: Famous at least if you’ve ever visited us at the National Trust Aberdulais Tin Works. The walk will trace the step of Lucy Lewis who lived in the Ivy Tower which rises above Tonna and worked at Aberdulais Tin Works at the time of the 1841 census.

So today: Whilst in costume (and looking like a sore thumb amongst the modern-day residents of Tonna) we took some other volunteers as guinea pigs to test drive and perfect the walk.

The walk starts from the Mosshouse Woods Car Park from where we retrace 15-year-old Lucy’s Walk down to work at the Tin Works.

We place Aberdulais Tin Works in the historical and modern landscape with fantastic views of Swansea and Neath.

Discover the social makeup of the landscape as Lucy passes through the village of Tonna.

We then come down to see the attractive features of Aberdulais Basin where we will discover how its features fitted in to the tinplate story.

This walk will be run for the public on 22nd and 26th October as part of the National Trust’s Walking Festival.
